Thanksgiving Day Celebration in India

Thanksgiving Day Celebration in India

Thanksgiving is celebrated world over with equal fervor and euphoria. It conveys the universal feeling of being thankful to Lord Almighty for his continuous grace. India is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural and a secular country; also popular for its spirituality, God loving and God fearing people. It is known for its ‘Unity in Diversity‘. With the spread of westen culture, Thanksgiving is celebrated in quite a few parts of India, the major festivity is however, observed by Christians in the state of Goa

Thanksgiving Day Celebration in Goa
Thanksgiving is primarily celebrated in the state of Goa, with a different name. Thanksgiving is popularly known as Ladin‘ or ‘Ladainha in India. ‘Ladin’ literally means a litany to the Virgin Mary. During the Thanksgiving ritual, people thank God for all the material and spiritual benefits. The Thanksgiving function is sponsored by a different person every year who either seeks benefits or has been lucky enough to have God’s special grace. Christians start preparing for Thanksgiving celebrations by purchasing wheat and gram, candles, wine and colored tinsel paper. A temporary platform/altar is constructed which is decorated with flowers, vines and creepers. Celebrations also include singing of hymns and prayers. The village local violinist/choirmaster conducts the entire show of singing of litany.Religious Feast of Thanksgiving in Goa
Another celebration associated with the feeling of Thanksgiving, is the popular religious feast of conception of Mother Mary. It is a time for farmers to cut the first harvest of milk-filed corn from the rice field and offer it to God. This is done to seek God’s blessing for a good harvest in the coming season. Though the date of celebrations varies in different parts of Goa, but generally it is celebrated on the 15th of August every year.

Does Thanksgiving have a place at work?

Does Thanksgiving have a place at work?

A job is a job. The worker punches in, gives up some time and limited personal freedom, does the work and in trade gets a wage in return. It is a classic transaction. An hour of work for an hour of pay.

It is hectic right now, all sorts of companies have been ramping up for the burst of easy holiday related sales. The focus is on doing it now. But what about January when it is time to trim staffing levels and start a new business cycle all over again. Where does Thanksgiving fit into all of this?

Most people who think of Thanksgiving think of Turkey dinner. Just go to the supermarket a few days before and watch the scramble for all the fixin’s.

The word gratitude comes to mind. Now here is a word that has some depth. It means different things depending on the situation. It is a powerful and transforming force.

Gratitude at work is sometimes out of place. Never more true than at your workplace. Remember the transaction, an hour of work for an hour of pay? Gratitude. It fits, it’s nice, but depending on the company and its culture, gratitude may not be on the top of mind.

So what can you expect if you bring a little gratitude to the workplace?

It can be an almost magical way to transform a negative environment into a positive one. In the workplace, gratitude creates an atmosphere of civility, which reduces stress, and that, in turn, cranks up your immune system and increases your job satisfaction. Focusing on gratitude can improve your overall feeling of well-being, even in the face of daily negativity. Gratitude can be practiced by everyone, no matter his or her level in the organization.

Now that we know gratitude can be a powerful tool to transform a negative workplace to a positive one, there is a an added benefit. There was a recent study that says grateful people actually live longer?

Here are three ways to bring gratitude to the workplace.

  1. Set up a timetable for paying sincere compliments to your coworkers and subordinates. Build a reminder into your to do lists for inspiration. The effects of gratitude will build relationships and benefit everyone involved.
  2. Depending on your management style and reputation around the office, dishing out a compliment may take a bit of work. Saying “thank you” is practically effortless all by itself but could throw co workers off their guard. Don’t worry though, it is still worthwhile. It is a matter of regularly thanking your coworkers, your subordinates, your boss, and those you interact with every day. You would think you wouldn’t have to thank people for doing their jobs, but it makes that person feel good, it makes you feel good, and it doesn’t cost a cent. And here’s the key: Say it like you mean it.
  3. Put effort into noticing the good things around you. Try not to focus on the negatives. Try to find a positive take. Once you get used to looking for the positive side, it will influence other thoughts. Yes, there is a positive aspect of sitting in freeway traffic, riding the bus or performing the more mundane tasks. Being positive is choice.

Which brings us the key thought…“It could be worse!” Remind yourself to find the positive. Your relationships will improve, you will discover new ways to approach routine matters and achieve positive outcomes where you least expected them. Bring gratitude to the office isn’t just a Thanksgiving thing. It is an approach to living. Be more positive! You may even live longer!

Are retailers taking Black Friday too far?

Are retailers taking Black Friday too far?

black friday shoppers

Black Friday is just around the corner, and retailers are racing to advertise blockbuster deals and their extended hours. Many of the major retailers will open at midnight or earlier on Thanksgiving or sooner, which has sparked backlash from some employees. In the future, will Black Friday always begin on Thursday night?  Retailers are even dealing with shoppers who are camping out a week in advance to be first in line for TVs, Playstations, Androids, iPads, iPhones, and whatever else is on sale at blow out prices this year.

There is a whole list of major retailers ready to go for this year’s Black Friday and a good number of them will be opening at midnight and some as early as 10pm, Thursday. The plan to open earlier on Thanksgiving is an attempt to goose sales. Sales forecasts this year are said to be just half of last year’s numbers. In recent years, as many as 22 million shoppers braved turkey coma a day later and went shopping.

Workers with family plans are upset with this year’s plan to start late Thursday. Some retailers are scheduling workers for 9 PM on Thanksgiving as they get ready to open as early as 10PM on Thanksgiving night. Not enough time to do the dishes!

Mary Ann, 33, is upset about her schedule, a cashier at a large discount department store, “My family dinner on Thanksgiving will still be on the table and I will be off to work. Why do they need to do such things? Last year, we had more than 50,000 customers over a three day period during Black Friday weekend. My store made loads of money. Now that’s not good enough this year. I am upset that after all the family commotion at my house I won’t even be able to get a nap before a crazy 10 hour shift. When did they think I was going to sleep?”

Some of Mary Ann’s co workers have resigned rather than work the new crazy Black Friday hours. “I feel bad for some of these guys that need their jobs. The company has them over a barrel. We work hard all year and now they want more from us” says, Mary Ann.

What is uncertain is whether shoppers will follow the retailer’s lead and flood the stores on Thanksgiving evening. No one knows for sure. The tradition is to get out on Friday morning and hit the stores early for the hottest deals. Some shoppers even go as far as keeping a tradition of sleeping on the doorstep of their favorite shops to be first in the store on Friday. For retailers with sleep over shoppers, it is a great opportunity to serve hot coffee and snacks ahead of the opening. How are they going to welcome shoppers on Thursday evening?

It will be interesting to see how workers respond after having to head into work Thursday night. For some, Thanksgiving has been the only day all the stores are closed. Thanksgiving celebrations let families unwind and relax and gives people a chance to re-charge. With the economy so bad and the stores so hungry for big holiday sales numbers, something has to give. Looks like some of us will be working Thursday night and won’t be too happy about it.

How about you? Are you willing to get in the car at 3 AM and drive to Best Buy, Walmart or where ever for save a few bucks? Hmmmm. This year, I started saving my Christmas dollars in January and had all my gifts bought and hidden away by August. Hey, who the remote? Hey, who is getting the firewood? Warm up some of that Brie would ya? I want a little snack after my nap!

Happy holiday shopping y’all!
